Meredith Sattler
Virginia Tech, STS
I'm a PhD candidate in Science and Technology Studies at Virginia Tech [NVA], an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and a LEED BD+C. Prior degrees focused in Architecture, Art, and Environmental Management. I've conducted limited field work in the Himalayas, technical documentation of archeological sites in Greece, and extensive archival research.
My interests include conceptualizations of dynamic sustainable constructed environments; interdisciplinary structure and practices between designers, engineers, and scientists; and design’s agency within natural environment-technology-human interactions. My dissertation unpacks the design, inhabitation, and implications of Biosphere 2’s ‘Human Experiment,’ during the enclosure missions from 1991-1994. It focuses on the creation of synthetic ecosystems, and their relation to the enclosed condition of the Anthropocene.
I'm interested in advancing STS approaches to material/visual data, phenomena, and environmental ontologies. Really look forward to meeting other emerging STS scholars interested in broad environmental issues within the workshop!
