Montserrat Perez Castro Perez Collaboration Bio

Text

I am interested in how people relate to food and how those relations affect the way they understand and act on their worlds, bodies, practices, and wellbeing. I was trained as a cultural anthropologist in Mexico, and then pursue two graduate degrees in interdisciplinary programs. One in social sciences and humanities where I learn to engage with people working in history, (analytical and continental) philosophy, literature, political science, STS, and cultural studies. I’m currently enrolled in a program in ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental studies, and a little bit of social science. I’m very interested in learning how to read/work/collaborate through different modes of knowledge in and outside academia, while attending to the structural inequalities of knowledge production. I have experience working with people from different backgrounds in community outreach, public health research, economy solidary projects, and the corporate sector. For my current project, I’m working on how desire for “sustainable food” reconfigures socioecological, technoscientific, and ethical-political relations in corporate food supply chains (mainly palm oil) in Latin America. My motivation is to understand the potential of food in socioecological transformations. I’m also very interested in working around desire, imagination, and capitalism.
