Katie Ulrich
Rice University, Anthropology
I am a doctoral candidate at Rice University in the Anthropology Department. This year I've been carrying out fieldwork in São Paulo and Campinas, Brazil (and now remotely) on sugarcane biotechnology. My research focuses on petrochemical replacements made from sugarcane and other plant sources, including not only biofuels but bio-based plastics, synthetic fabrics, solvents, specialty chemicals, and more. I aim to study broader questions around science, agriculture, industry, extraction, and transition. I am a student representative for 4S and was previously a conference co-secretary for 4S 2019 New Orleans and a co-coordinator of the Ethnography Studio. I have experience in planning academic workshops and conferences, grant writing and grant writing training, and administrative organization as a biology research lab manager. I would love to collaborate with others interested in communication with and interdisciplinary work with natural science research communities. More information about my research can be found here.
