Critical Commentary
This montage of a "Co-Imagining Futures" workshop shows interactions between Conley and York (STS, Futures Lab co-directors), Futures Lab students (mostly STEM students), and our invited expert, Dr. Morgan Benton, Associate Professor in the School of Integrated Sciences at JMU whose area of expertise is in computing, mobile app development, and IT education.
In our Co-Imagining Futures research project, we explore using collaborative scenario analysis and design fiction as methods of critical participation to engage our invited expert in critical inquiry regarding the societal dimensions of their research/area of expertise. Undergraduate students co-facilitate the workshop, and are important mediators between participating experts from different disciplinary traditions. Can such methods facilitate interactional competence between the participating experts, develop trading zones to enable reflexive engagement across disciplinary boundaries, and teach students theories and methods related to STS, critical participation, and anticipatory ethical reasoning?
